The Mastermind Review

This week was the Elleiance Inspire Mastermind Meeting. The meeting began with a conversation I want to share with you.

How do you balance the ‘fake it till you make it philosophy with the ‘showing up authentically’ philosophy?

For so long showing up confidently even when you didn’t quite have the confidence was how you got ahead. Doing things before you are ready, saying yes and figuring it out, showing up full of imposter syndrome but not letting anyone know you have it.  Always put together, always professional, always faking it till you're making it (to a degree). But in the last few years something has changed and showing up authentically, raw, real, sometimes messy, or vulnerable is the strategy that is working online to build audience connection and in many cases, big business growth. So now what?  What version of yourself do you bring to the party?

Here are the top 5 tips that we recommend:

  • Read the room.  Understand the situation and the platform.  Business is strategic, this is not your page (unless it’s solely a personal brand), what does your audience want from you at that moment?

  • Both are required but either overdone can create the opposite effect you were hoping for.  Both blended in moderation is the perfect mix.

  • “Faking it” and moving with fear before you are ready will always be required for growth so learning to be comfortable with that is a skill that will serve you well.  Sharing that this is a stretch for you, sharing that you are hitting a growth edge with this project but are working hard to learn lots and do a great job will connect the audience to you.

  • Everyone loves an underdog.  Don’t be afraid to share that you are new at something.  People love that and will have much more empathy for you if you make a mistake.  They might even cheer you on!

  • Don’t overthink it.  Showing up consistently, whatever that looks like for you, is always the best strategy.  Your audience follows you and hired you for a reason, that opportunity was given to you for a reason.  You are always the magic sauce in the recipe so let that shine and the rest will fall into place.

There were so many insightful and thought-provoking ideas shared on this topic and we all left the conversation with new ideas on how to be very thoughtful and intentional in blending these two schools of thought.  If you are looking for a table where you can have higher-level business conversations, join us!
